AESSC Project Initiation

last updated 2006-07-14

This document outlines the procedure for initiating new projects in the AES Standards Committee for the assistance of AESSC officers.

Initiation procedure

There are two parts to initiating projects in AESSC.

  1. Project Request

Anyone can request that a subject be considered for standardisation. This could include members of the public as well as members of existing AESSC groups. In practise, most projects are proposed by Working Groups.

Project requests may be entered on-line or by sending the appropriate information to the standards secretariat.

  2. Project Initiation

The responsibility for project initiation belongs to the AESSC Subcommittees, to whom the various Working Groups report. The secretariat will present the request formatted as a Microsoft Word form (a sample, "proj-init-word-form.doc" is available from the AESSC document site). The Subcommittee will need to confirm that the proposal and intended outcome are appropriate and sufficient to suport an AESSC project. The completed form will be held on file. It may be revised by the Subcommittee if necessary.
A more detailed procedure in the form of a flowchart is available here as a PDF file.

Project Criteria

There are many possible criteria for a successful project, however most of them can be summarised quite simply in a series of pertinent questions.
  • Why is this project necessary or useful?
  • What will the output be?
  • Who benefits?
  • What other standards does this work relate to?
  • What liaisons should be involved?
  • What alternative standards body might handle this work?
  • What's the AES advantage?
A fuller exploration of these questions is available here as a PDF file.
