AES-X162, Amendment to AES31-2, File-size extension using the "RF64" technique

SCOPE
|
This amendment to AES31-2 provides a method of extending audio files beyond the limits set by the RIFF Wave format. It uses the "RF64" technique to permit 64-bit file addressing to accommodate longer recording times and multiple channels in a single file.

RATIONALE
|
The methodology is based on three assumptions:
The current AES31-2 is based on RIFF Wave files which have a maximum file-size limit of 2 GB (or 1 GB, depending on computer operating-system implementation). The RF64 technique will permit arbitrarily large file sizes while maintaining backward compatibility for files smaller that, say, 1 GB. This technique has been adopted by the EBU and is in active use.

AES members have the necessary expertise, and already publishes the parent AES31-2 standard.
