John Bowen describing the functions of the synths many module sections to several intrigued students
Meeting Topic: Solaris Demonstration and Synthesis Lecture
Moderator Name: Lee Sebel
Speaker Name: John Bowen, Synth designer
Meeting Location: South City Campus Studio
John Bowen the designer of the Solaris hardware synthesizer came in for a demonstration of his creation, as well as giving students a crash course on synthesis concepts and techniques. While displaying the capabilities of the effect modules on the board John described the process of affecting the oscillators and wave forms through simple modulation, filter, envelop, and fm synthesis effects. Delving deeper into these concepts John began to describe the complex harmonic relationships that could be developed through these processes while our MIDI and sound design professor Lee used these aural examples as an opportunity to expand upon the information that he had been describing to introductory synthesis students throughout the semester
